| Kirk Saywell on Life: My Opinion | 27th June 2009 |
I'm Kirk, I built, own and run this website. I am a college student, I live in Essex, UK and this is my thoughts on life. This is mentioned in the footnote of my website, but just a reminder before you read this, everything I say is an opinion. As a UK citizen and a member of the internet community, I have a right to freedom of expression - This is my freedom of expression, this is my opinion. I do not intend to offend any individual, organisation or culture, but please do feel free to contact me using the contact page on this website if you have any thoughts or opinions that you would like to share with me. Life, okay so where do we begin... well lets first take a look at creation. There are many different beliefs about the creation of the world, I choose to believe science. This doesn't really matter for what I want to say, but it could affect the way you interpret it. Let's assume for the sake of this article, that people, life, plants etc already exist. When we first existed, the primary purpose of our lives was to survive as individuals, and the secondary purpose, to survive as a species. Over time, natural selection has shown us the "best" species; everything alive today has survived a long time, so it's met the purpose of life, so let's take this a little bit further. We exist, we have survived as individuals. To survive as a specifies, talking generically, we have to reproduce. In our species, I’m fairly sure most of us know how this is done, but lets just stick to the traditional method. Humans find a partner to have a child with. Child grows up, finds a partner, makes child... etc - You get the idea. We already know all of this, so why do I mention it? Well, for now, lets just cast that aside. The next thing I want to talk about is the way we have evolved in society, I have only been alive since 1992, so I am speaking from knowledge that has been passed to me from education and other people, the media, my parents, my peers etc. I like to think that as a world, we have learned to accept each other more for who we are, what we do, and what we think. Without being too specific, a great example of this would be how we live in a mixed race society, how homosexuality is accepted in society and of course the classic, woman’s rights. Technology has come a long way, I happen to be rather passionate about technology, out of everything I consider myself to be any good at, technology is at the top, there isn't much else, but that's not my topic for today. Again, you might be wondering what all this is building up to. The next thing to consider is money, lets be honest, nobody in this society can really get very far without credit of some description, those of you who believe that you don't need money to be happy, fair enough, but in my opinion - that's a load of rubbish. Money is a requirement to live; it is also a key to happiness. This is turning in to a bit of a rant I suppose, but here's my view on the law. The law exists to help run our country, to keep human society in order, to have justice, to have freedom and, by definition, to keep people happy. Everyone knows that the law is flawed, again, that's not something I’m going to go into in detail. Now I suppose I’m going to put some of this stuff together, but first I am just going to list a few things that I consider to either be a need, or to be something that makes me happy; please understand that just because I need it that doesn’t mean it makes me happy, and just because it makes me happy that doesn’t mean I need it. -Money ...Yeah, that list could go on for ages, they seem to be the things that come off the top of my head, in no particular order, but I’m sure I could think of many more! I am sure you could too. What *really* pisses me off though, is morals. Why on earth did we agree on morals? That's a stupid question isn't it? Well not really. If you know anybody who genuinely, by definition of law and morals, has *never* done anything wrong - please give me their details because I’d love to speak to them. I honestly don't believe that a single person in the whole world who has lived up to the age of 12 can honestly say that they have *never* done anything legally or morally wrong. I could be mistaken, but I’m talking from opinion. So baring this in mind, tell me why someone who comes close to that description; no criminal record, very polite, very friendly, helpful, tries hard, doesn't go against their friends and most importantly, is as moral as anyone could be expected to be in both their home and work environments... tell me why they do no better in life than say... a person who simply doesn't care about anyone or anything? Well, my opinion on this is simple. The world, this country, is a mess. It is run by a group of people who call themselves the government, who lie and cheat to everyone in the population, just so that they can run the country the way *THEY* want to, ultimately, so that they can survive and be happy. That's what everyone does though isn't it? We do things in order to survive and be happy. I don't blame you. Now let’s put the pieces back together. Human existence, to survive as an individual, to find a partner, to continue human existence. To be happy, to evolve, and to have as many friends on facebook as possible. Yeah - That is the way we are going. I can tell you, as an inexperienced young teenager, still with a life ahead of me, that in this life, lying and cheating, being immoral, breaking the rules occasionally is the only way to get anywhere. I come from a family who believe in working for their money and never asking for more than what they have. They spend most hours of the day, most days of the year, going to work doing the same boring job day after day, just to bring home money to survive, and to stay happy. The plan of course, is to save all this money for retirement so they can continue to be happy once they are too old to work. Life - how fun does this sound! If I was trying to sell "life" to you, how interested would you be at this point? I'm being a little pessimistic I guess, maybe I should take a look on the brighter side. As a human, we have an easy life, no more natural predators really, don't have to hunt for food, just click a few buttons on a website or drive a few miles down the road with a bit of plastic. Now we don’t have to worry about that, we have more time for fun, right? Let’s take love, happy stuff is love, until it all goes wrong and drives people to suicide. Ok, it's not always that bad, but let’s face it; love can hurt just as much as love can heal. Music, that's a great one, I love listening to music, it changes how I’m feeling about stuff, and it’s a pleasure to have the choice of so much beautiful music, something I really do enjoy. Friends, aha! Friends, the people who actually matter yeah! Friends are the people you choose to be with, not because they are family who you are subjected to be with, or colleagues from work who you have to work with, but people who you think... yeah, I like them, let’s be friends. Friends are another great quality of life, and something I believe is unique to human kind. I'm beginning to get bored of my own article now, but what I’m trying to say here is that life is this mental thing that changes all the time, in my opinion, we don't have any set "purpose" we just live because we can, and we survive by choice, natural selection shows we are a strong species who dominate earth, and go round all day in chairs on wheels with bits of plastic as credit. I'm just some 16 year old kid from Essex with an opinion. I just want to say really, life is what you make of it. By definition, all you have to do is exist, but what is the smegging point of existing without happiness, and where does happiness come from - well I don't bloody know! It's down to you, what makes you smile and actually feel inside like you *want* to do something. Just recently actually, I've been spending more time with some friends and I think to myself, yeah, I like this. I sit at home and watch my favourite TV shows, and think, yeah, I like this. I eat my dinner with my family, thinking, could you pass me the ketchup? But inside also thinking, yeah, I like this. Here's the bottom line, you've probably got 60 to 80 years to enjoy life, the first 18 years are usually spent in education, the last 20 years are usually spent at home or in the garden, you must spend about a third of what's left sleeping, so 13 years of actually doing something with your life - are you going to work for the sake of existing? Are you going to find a job that you ENJOY doing, maybe working with technology, creating music, teaching, fixing radiators, racing cars - or maybe you're just going to sit around and do nothing until the day you die. Well personally, I choose to do a job I will enjoy, and if there is anything I have learnt, it’s that if you want to make money doing something you enjoy, you've got to lie, you've got to cheat, you've got to be immoral without necessarily breaking the law. I'm happy with who I am, there is a lot I have to wish for, to dream about, and to desire (however you want to say it) and part of life is going out and fore filling those desires. We can't be bothered to go and hunt prey, so we use "credit" to pay some bloke from down the road to do it for us. How about taking your skill and doing something with it. I'm not religious. So, see you some time between now and year 2080, if not, I probably won't ever see you. |
